I talk about this a lot with my guests. Every stylist or salon does things differently. Connecting with your stylist on a personal level as well as connecting with the services they offer is so important when finding the right stylist for you.
It is uncomfortable when you go to an appointment, and you realize that you don’t really jive with your stylist. It could be that your stylist is not listening to your needs for your Color or Cut however you are comfortable with them on a personal level. Or you LOVE the way your hair comes out every time however your stylist doesn’t really match your energy.
First of all, let me spill the tea for you. Hairstylists DO NOT own you! If you are ready to make a change that is completely okay! If your stylist doesn’t offer that new and latest technique you have been longing to try out, it is perfectly okay to go to another stylist to receive the service you have been asking for. If you have been made to feel negatively for wanting to venture out, please remember it says more about them than about you. Those feelings are a projection from a scarcity mindset. I admit in my early career this feeling was all too familiar. It took me awhile to realize that it’s okay for any relationship to move on. Support within the hair industry around this topic has only recently began to flourish. The hair industry can feel so competitive which is where that fear stems from. If you want to venture out and try someone new I fully support it! Now a days, the hair industry is booming with new and long time stylists. I promise you, there is a great stylist out there for you. Most of us stylists just want to see you happy with your hair!
I have been in the industry for 15 years now. I have an amazing following! I provide a lot of consultation work to make sure any new guest that comes to see me is the right fit. I have a handful of stylist friends that I can always refer to if my guests need a service that I don’t offer or have experience in performing. After all, I am no magician, I am one person who unfortunately can’t do it all. From my perspective I would be doing you or my guests a disservice in performing a service that I couldn’t give my all to. Some other reasons for branching out to a new stylist is when the location is no longer feasible, pricing is no longer within your budget, or both schedules are not aligning.
When looking for a new stylist, word of mouth, in my opinion, is the first rule of thumb! Another is Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook, Google and the stylist’s website (like this one!). You can get visuals of the stylist’s work. You can also get a sense of their vibe and see their brand before even reaching out to book an appointment. Another option is booking a Consultation. It’s usually a 15-45 minute appointment where you can discuss what you’re looking for and get a feel of what to expect for when you come in for your official appointment. Trust your gut on this, if you are still questioning it by the end, I would recommend getting a second opinion before committing.
All in all, I hope this eases your mind as you start your search for your new stylist! Any questions comment below or check out my website to contact me!
